World War Z June Update

World War Z came out months ago and rekindled some nostalgia for the Valve Left4Dead series, but once initial play through was complete, interest seemed to wane. One of the major issues with the game was the lack of a third act during the Tokyo missions, cutting the narrative short at a point when a more desperate and chilling scenario was created by loading much of the remaining population on cruise ships.

The developer finally completed the third act and going in it was fantastic, but by the end, you were sufficiently burned out again, with little new strategy or adaptation to difficulty needed. I’d still like to see a full crossover of all of the missions to bring the stories all together for a concluding story line.  I think that would bring a more satisfactory end to the time spent playing the game. As it was pre-update, the game felt just like the theatrical movie, a great ride with fantastic moments but the end fizziled and you were left feeling unsatisfied.

And yet… the free updates roadmap shows that unlike the movie, we’re going to actually get to continue the stories and we’re getting new features and functionality.  Obviously they will eventually be injecting purchasable item DLC for character customization, but more than just character item customization, coming in the free updates are new character skins, new weapons, new wave modes(!), a weekly challenge mode, and more fixes. The road ahead looks very promising, and if you view the game like it’s 1.0 was more of an early release, it feels polished and just in need of some extended content.
